Governor in a spot over rejected assembly nominee

By STEVE MKAWALE

Nakuru Governor Kinuthia Mbugua is on the spot once again after he failed to degazette the appointment of the county secretary despite revoking five others rejected by the assembly.

County secretary Joseph Motari was one of the six appointees to the county executive committee who were rejected by members of the assembly.

But surprisingly, when Mbugua nullified the appointments of the rejected nominees vide gazette notice No. 9086 dated July 5, he left out Motari whose name appeared in an earlier gazette notice No. 8284 dated June 21 that announced the appointments.

Nakuru Stakeholders Forum has questioned why Motari is still in office yet his appointment was rejected alongside those of other eight nominees.

In gazette notice No. 8284, Mbugua appointed Dr Julius Ogeto, Pollyne Anyango Owoko, Dr Stanley Chepkwony and Prof Mary Kariuki as cabinet secretaries to various ministries. The same notice announced the appointment of Motari as county secretary.

Now the Stakeholders Forum has written to Transition Authority chairman questioning why the county secretary was still in office.

YET TO RESIGN

A letter signed by chairman Wycliff Oguda, claims that Motari, who was appointed the interim county secretary while serving as a district commissioner in Rongai, is yet to resign from the Provincial Administration post. “We request Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission to urgently investigate Motari to ascertain whether he still earns his salary as a district officer and why,” read part of a statement from the organisation.

They demanded immediate removal of Motari from office citing the rejection of his appointment by the assembly and failure by the governor not to revoke the same via the June 5 gazette notice.

Mbugua is yet to forward other names of nominees to the assembly for vetting to replace those rejected.

Motari’s continued stay in office is causing jitters among a section of the county executive committee members who were approved.

Motari declined to comment on the matter, saying the governor was in a position to respond to our queries.

Governor Mbugua has been at the Coast for a meeting with other governors and attempts to reach him for comment have been unsuccessful.
