Shaffie, Marya now an item

In a surprising turn of events, king of radio Shaffie Weru and Marya of Chokoza fame could be stirring things up after a secret engagement bash in Mombasa, writes CAROLINE NYANGA

Operations at a serene resort in Mombasa’s North Coast came to a near standstill on Wednesday evening when,Mayra and popular radio presenter Shaffie Weru secretly threw a party to mark their engagement.

Although the two have always been spotted together chatting during various local events, it never occurred to many that a mere chat would later culminate into a love affair.

Shaffie and Marya had booked a luxurious suite at the Sunrise Resort Apartments & Spa and were surprised to receive inquiry calls from the crew after a tip off.

Our source constantly kept this writer abreast via SMS with a blow-by-blow account of Wednesday’s happenings and this writer was able to ‘confront’ the duo with up-to-date information as the evening progressed.

Annoyed by our insistence, Shaffie caved in and agreed to talk but refused to divulge the details of their relationship. His main concern was how we had tracked them to North Coast.

Exclusive serenity

The resort’s motto, ‘experience exclusive serenity’, appears to have been the couple’s priority.

Starting afresh

So, why go for another Muslim, if the first relationship collapsed on religious grounds, Pulse asked Marya. And all she could say is "Pass".

She admits that Mustapha sensed there was something special developing between the two and he confronted her about it.

"I told him that if the bird was meant for him, it would eventually come back and perch on his shoulder," Marya says.

Now, it appears that the bird, after being let free, has found somewhere to perch.

How did they manage to keep the relationship secret for so long?

"It was tricky," Marya admits. "We would see each other in various public functions. We are both in the entertainment industry so it was easy for us to hook up during concerts and look like we were there just for showbiz," Marya divulged.

Hard task

She revealed the hard part was avoiding being too cosy with Shaffie to avoid raising eyebrows.

"Loving someone and pretending otherwise — in his presence — is very difficult. Just ask any girl," she quipped.

When Pulse inquired from Shaffie the fate of his long-time girlfriend Debbie Asila and his latest boo, Joan, he retorted, "That’s none of your business."

It is not clear whether the two were aware of the latest development as none of them picked our calls. Pulse can only hope that they can keep the promise to each other just as Nameless and Wahu have done.

As for Mustapha, the poor soul says he does not regret spending a single moment with Marya and declined to state whether he would attend their wedding if invited.
