K'Ogalo's coup d'etat

By TONY NGARE

Whether Gor Mahia wins this year’s Kenya Premier League or not, one thing is evident, K’Ogalo’s fans have contributed to the good fortunes of the once mighty club.

Travelling to Thika en masse, to play Thika United, K’Ogalo’s twelfth man appears to have made the difference. The fans have valiantly stood by the team even when the League leaders Ulinzi appeared to have safely locked up the trophy in the armoury.

When all seemed gloomy after the Nyayo stadium stampede despite the win over archrivals AFC leopards, Gor’s fortunes changed swiftly with Ulinzi dropping vital points to give K’Ogalo title pursuit a new lease of life. So last week when Gor faced off with Thika United, there was everything to play for as the near impossible at the start of the league now appeared probable. Though some neutrals have been wagging the tongues stating that K’Ogalo’s penalty statics are startling, Gor marches on unperturbed.

PENALTIES

In the last two matches, Gor has bagged six priceless points from the penalty spot. It was none other than former Sofapaka manager Sam Ssimbwa who popularised the phrase ‘As usual, Gor get another penalty’.

Well…without casting aspersions, it’s good to admit that Gor find themselves in the enviable position kwa sababu ya bidii yao. So the big question on everyone’s lips is, can Gor pull a fast one on the Army men?

Does the fancied team have adequate arsenal to attack and secure the prize? While as the contest appears to go all the way to the wire, things could get clearer this weekend. For both Gor and Ulinzi, this weekend’s matches would be like a cup final.

It won’t matter how many glorious wins each team has clocked over the season, failure to get maximum points from their ties will wipe out all the good memories, hopes and aspirations that faithful fans for both teams have held since the opening day.

What started as a six-horse race contest consisting of Ulinzi, Thika, Tusker, Sofapaka, Gor and Mathare United has now gone down to a mere two-horse gallop for the glory.

Whatever happened to the other teams, some lively football fans will point out that those were just donkeys attempting to gate crash an all horses affair.

Like the disciplined contingent they are, Ulinzi have kept their cool despite the ‘artillery fire’ and code red threats issued on the pitch by the title chasing Gor. Ever since Ulinzi wrestled the Premiership lead, the team has defended the premier position with both blood and sweat. Hopefully DoD is taking note.
