Celebrity baby boom

The moment songstress Nyota Ndogo hit the stage during E-Sir’s Memorial her fans easily noticed her bulging tummy as her vocals serenaded them. Unlike the other performances, Nyota watched her step while dancing gracefully and not rigorously.

Dressed in short pink dress and black fishnet stockings, the diva sauntered on stage while subconsciously holding her stomach dearly. She looked a bit bigger prompting MC Philipo to ask her whether she was expecting.

And she did not shy from the question responding that she is indeed expecting her second born.

"It is something I planned for a while and was prepared for it. My son Mbarak Salim who turned seven last Sunday has been pestering me to get him a younger sister or brother. It got me thinking hard about the whole situation," said Nyota who is preparing for more concerts.

"I’m not going to sit back and will continue touring. Already I have gigs lined up in Morogoro, Meru, Mombasa and Kilifi," she said.

Pinky
The jovial singer is not alone as a horde of other local celebrities are expecting too. The list includes singers Habida and Esther Wahome, radio presenter Sheila Rabala, former beauty queen Pinky Ghelani, news anchors Janet Kanini and Lilian Kanene, among others.

Lilian Kanene

KTN news anchor Lilian Kanene nee Muli says she is coping well and happy about her pregnancy.

" I’m excited, more so when the baby kicks- I can’t wait to hold my baby in my arms," says the presenter who is thirty-three weeks pregnant.

Lilian mentions that however, the only problem she has sometimes is getting a good sleep.

"I tend to have difficulties in sleeping more so because of the positioning of the baby. Because of this I have made it a habit to walk most times such that by the time I get home I am exhausted and able to sleep well."

Her advice to mothers—celebrities or not— is to be positive about pregnancy. "I know it can be a bit depressing especially with the body changes and the fact that you cannot fit well into your cloths — but it’s just for a short time". She maintains that one should be able to take good care of oneself in order to get back into shape.

HABIDA

Habida says she is doing well and looking forward to being a mother. "I believe at this point God gives one the strength to be able to go about her daily activities well without even noticing that you are pregnant," she says.

She adds that although she is happy to be pregnant, it took her by surprise. "I can’t really say that it is something I planned for. I was stuck in between, but nevertheless, I am glad that it happened."

Sheila Rabala
"I am keeping fit, it is the best you can do when pregnant," said Pinky.

Sheila Rabala

Sheila says being pregnant has changed her life. When asked whether it was planned she could only say both Yes and No.

"Yes and No because we had reached a point in our relationship where we agreed we were ready to have a child, but when it happened it was a welcome surprise. I also wanted to have my first baby before I turned 28,"said Sheila.

"My lifestyle has changed. From my dressing, I had to reluctantly abandon my high heels and junk food for flat shoes, fruits and vegetables respectively. I stay home with the TV remote in my hands on a Saturday night than go out with the girls.

When it comes to weight, Sheila says that she has really embraced the pregnancy, that although she had added weight it has not been too drastic.

"Most people think that having a baby will affect their careers, I keep thinking of how my career will affect my baby. I already know that just the experience of pregnancy has taken me to a whole new level of maturity that will benefit all other aspects of my life including my career," she said.
