Coronavirus pandemic forces Premier League to delay season further

The Premier League has delayed the season until at least April 30th due to the ongoing coronavirus crisis.

“The FA, Premier League, EFL and women’s professional game, together with the PFA and LMA, understand we are in unprecedented times and our thoughts are with everyone affected by COVID-19. 

“We have collectively agreed that the professional game in England will be further postponed until no earlier than 30 April. 

“The progress of COVID-19 remains unclear and we can reassure everyone the health and welfare of players, staff and supporters are our priority," a statement seen by Game Yetu reads.

The football bodies noted they would continue to follow Government advice and work collaboratively to keep the situation under review and explore all options available to find ways of resuming the season when the conditions allow. 

Premier League clubs attempted to block a plan to complete a season placed on ice by the coronavirus pandemic when they met via a conference call on Thursday morning.

Last week, fixtures were suspended until April 4 at the earliest.

Liverpool are 25 points clear of Manchester City at the top of the Premier League having won 27 of 29 matches in their bid to secure a first top-flight title since 1990.

Major sporting events around the world that fans could never live without have been postponed due to the rapid increase of Covid -19.

The last time major sporting activities came to a halt globally dates back to 1939 during the outbreak of the Second World War.

In the past week, sports enthusiasts have witnessed the gradual decrease of their favourite games, with football and basketball fans among those suffering the most.

The penultimate stages of these developments forced professional footballers to play games in empty stadiums, in what soccer bodies referred to as ‘behind closed doors’.

Currently, there are 2,626 confirmed cases of COVID-19 in the United Kingdom, with 108 people succumbing.
