ODM leadership backs Raila-Ruto broad-based government till 2027

[Wilberforce Okwiri, Standard] The ODM leadership has reaffirmed its commitment to the broad-based government initiated by President William Ruto and the former party leader, the late Raila Odinga until 2027. The Central Management Committee chaired by the acting party leader Oburu Oginga in meeting held in a Nairobi yesterday resolved to support the agenda started by Ruto and Raila until the 2027 General Election. In a statement read by the ODM Secretary-General Edwin Sifuna, the party leadership vowed to live by the ideals espoused by their deceased former leader who stood for good governance and the unity of Kenyans, which they said will ensure the country remained united. "I reiterate that the ODM party will remain in the broad-based government initiated by President William Ruto and our former Party Leader the late Raila Odinga until the next elections in August 2027, a relationship guided by a 10-point agenda we agreed on," said Sifuna. The party leadership promised to fight for good governance and champion national interests just like Raila did where in most instances he put the national interests first and extended an olive branch to the national government after contesting in four elections where his victory was stolen. Sifuna said they will strive to keep the party strong just like Raila could have wished stating that they will go ahead with 20th anniversary celebrations as planned in honour of their leader who was committed in making it one of the most successful political parties in Africa. The ODM Secretary-General appealed to the national government to release the money owed to political parties so as to safeguard their independence in order to ensure that there is a robust democracy in the country. "We have a moral duty to continue with the legacy of our former Party Leader Raila Odinga who despite being robbed his election victory in four instances, extended an olive hand to the government while putting the interests of the country ahead of his personal interests," said Sifuna. He said that Raila built the party on the foundation of values of democracy truth, honest and fairness calling on all the leaders and supporters to resist temptation of scattering in despair but remaining united just like he could have wished. Sifuna said they have vowed never to be a reason for a break up in the party asking the media to avoid the tendency for sensational news over the perceived divisions in the party and over which faction is having an upper hand over the other which will be a counter to Raila's dream. He said the Central Management Committee had set a foundation in place for a strong party where they recognise different views over various issues does not necessarily lead to divisions or the breakup of the party.
