Motion to kick President Uhuru Kenyatta out to benefit URP, says CORD

Tongaren MP Eseli Simiyu

NAIROBI: Some Opposition leaders have called on their counterparts in Deputy President William Ruto's United Republican Party (URP) to support the impeachment motion for their own gain.

Coalition for Reforms and Democracy (CORD) members claimed there are more than sufficient grounds for the impeachment motion.

The Opposition, aware that to garner the necessary two-thirds majority of the lawmakers in the august House is a tall order, however cautioned the Jubilee administration against taking the motion lightly.

Orange Democratic Movement's (ODM) Opondo Kaluma (Homa Bay Town) laughed off the chest-thumping of some of Jubilee members that they will shoot down the motion.

"TNA is exclusively running the Government and the earlier the URP wing wakes up to the reality the better. This impeachment motion will only help the DP ascend to power," said Mr Kaluma.

About grounds for impeachment, Kaluma cited constant breaches of the Constitution, high levels of corruption in the Government, politics of exclusion, negative ethnicity against Kenyans and the casual manner in which the President has responded to critical matters, the latest being the teachers strike.

"President Kenyatta took oath of office and swore to respect the rule of law and to protect the Constitution. He has failed severally to do what he swore to do," added Kaluma.

Tongaren MP Eseli Simiyu said as a coalition, they have every responsibility to lobby and ensure that they garner the requisite numbers to succeed in impeaching Uhuru.

But Makadara MP Benson Mutura dared CORD to table the impeachment motion today, stating that they will shoot it down with a vote of confidence in the Jubilee administration.
