Lobby protests new Cabinet’s swearing-in

NAKURU, KENYA: Civil society organisations have supported plans to impeach Nakuru Governor Kinuthia Mbugua following his move to swear in rejected county executive nominees.

Yesterday, more than 20 organisations meeting in Nakuru vowed to mobilise residents to petition the County Assembly to impeach Mbugua, alleging that he is not transparent on his operation of county affairs.

Kemunche Masese, a representative from Centre for Enhancing Democracy and Good Governance among other members, expressed disappointment over Mbugua’s move to ignore the Assembly’s disapproval of his pick.

They also took issue with the swearing-in ceremony venue held at the exclusive members club, Rift Valley Sports Club, away from the precincts of government premises where such activities normally take place. “Cabinet executives were to be presented to the County Assembly and vetted and those who qualified would be allowed to run departments. The governor however has sworn in those who did not qualify,” said Masese.

He claimed earlier attempts by the governor to elect a Speaker of his choice failed after members voted Ms Susan Kihiga, who is said to be more conversant with the county operations.

Equal rights

At the same time, the civil groups have called on Mbugua to invite public participation in project proposals to enable fast development and project implementation. “The public understands issues facing them and which ones need to be prioritised,” said Masese.

Nakuru County Human Rights Network coordinator David Kuria said the governor should set up measures and strategies to enable all residents enjoy equal rights.

“Nakuru is a cosmopolitan town and county leaders should ensure they are equally represented in terms of employment, discussion of project proposals among other issues as a way of promoting unity,” he said.
