Worry not about Kibaki; We’ve taken care of him

By NJOROGE KINUTHIA

Former President Kibaki received a befitting farewell from among others the military officers, who besides giving him a guard of honour, presented him a tractor. A peasant, who has dirtied his  hands with a hoe all his farming life watched the spectacle with envy.  He was later to tell PointBlank: “The President doesn’t need it. I’m the one who needs a tractor.”

PointBlank doesn’t know what the Mr Kibaki is doing with this gift, but suspects it’s lying idly somewhere in Othaya. Sadly, it is not only the military that can’t make the right gift choices. The National Oil Corporation of Kenya has reportedly given Kibaki a Sh50 million gift.

While it is good to take care of retirees no one should worry about the former President. Sh50m might sound much but to Kibaki, who is well catered for by the taxpayer, it’s like adding a drop of oil into the Turkana well. If Nock won’t mind it, we could show them thousands of desperate retirees who can’t even afford a square meal. And Sh50m can feed thousands of these hungry mouths. But, pray, what’s oiling Nock’s generosity and just where does it get this kind of cash to dish out?
