There is something of value in Kitengela’s den of meat

Kenya: So are you back kabisa (permanently) or you are still travelling back to America,” friends keep asking, and I can’t quite tell if they wish me to stay on or simply ship out.

“You know,” some pursue, “It is difficult to tell where you are writing from…” which further quashes the notion that I have to remain here to comment on my society.

The in-between world that I inhabit is called “nowhereness” by some wise friend, but since it seems most would rather I have a firm grip on a place, let me say Kitengela has become my favourite haunt for the obvious reason that parking fees there remain a paltry Sh30.

Moreover, the township probably has the highest concentration of nyama choma eateries.

Within a radius of one kilometre, one is simply spoilt for choice, from eateries with manicured lawns and clean swimming pools, or taverns with heavy, hazy, air from the roasting meat.

My favourite spot remains the Arusha Meat Den, which fits in the latter category. It might not boast the best décor or ambience but it has a more essential quality — honest workers.

Tear drops

I like placing my lunch order by phone, but as a city-based hustler, I can neither tell the hour, nor the minute when I will be free to eat.

Unlike other eateries where you will be fed with stories after your order has been sold to others, the meat is left to sizzle gently to such a supple roast that when I finally sit to eat, a tear drops at every bite!
