Individuals and corporates should help ensure that every child is in school

Countless children worldwide continue to struggle to access education. [Wilberforce Okwiri, Standard]

Education is one of humanity’s most potent tools for progress and transformation. From fostering critical thinking skills to promoting economic development, education is a catalyst for change.

Despite the critical role of education in empowering individuals and the society, countless children worldwide continue to struggle to access this fundamental human right.

According to the United Nations, the world is falling far behind in achieving quality education. Without additional measures by 2030, the United Nations estimates that 300 million children will lack basic literacy skills.

Additionally, only one out of six countries will achieve universal secondary school completion target. These statistics not only paint a picture of the educational landscape but also underscore the urgent need for concerted action.

Education is not merely about acquiring knowledge; it is about empowering individuals to break the cycle of poverty, to pursue their dreams and to contribute meaningfully to their communities. Reflecting on my journey, I am convinced of the transformative power of education. Coming from a modest middle-class family, I traversed the corridors of public primary, secondary and university education. This journey has not only served as a foundation on which I have built my life but also unlocked doors to a world of possibilities.

Economic hardship is one of the leading barriers preventing children from accessing education. Recent Ministry of Education data shows that 130,000 children have not reported to secondary school across Kenya. The responsibility to champion education falls not only on government and policymakers but also on individuals and brands.

While governments play a crucial role in shaping education policies, the scale of the challenge demands broader engagement. We all have a stake in ensuring every child has the opportunity to learn, grow and thrive. Individuals and brands must pool resources and ensure financial obstacles do not hinder children on their path to education.

Education scholarships provide an opportunity for individuals and corporates to drive economic growth and development. The ripple effects of education extend far beyond the individual, influencing social dynamics, economic prosperity and the overall fabric of the society. By providing scholarships, children will be empowered with critical life skills that enable them to break away from the cycle of dependence.

Secondly, investing in education scholarships is an investment in human capital. The role of education in instilling a mindset of lifelong learning and adaptability cannot be overstated. Additionally, it is closely linked to better health outcomes and overall well-being. An educated populace will not only drive innovation but also contribute to the workforce, fuel economic growth and healthier lifestyle choices.

Thirdly, promoting education scholarships will foster goodwill among communities. By rallying behind education, individuals and corporates can become agents of positive change and contribute to the betterment of the society. SDG4 highlights that quality education is a pivotal driver for positive change, appreciating the role of education in fostering a sustainable and equitable world.
