A Grade Two pupil was found dead in unclear circumstances in Homabay County.

Ten-year old Faith Achieng’ was found hanging from the rooftop of her step mother's house at Rayuer village, Kowuor Sub-location in Rachuonyo North Sub-county.

It is reported the girl left home for Emmanuel Mercy Academy on Tuesday morning but was never seen until evening.

Her parents then began search efforts and upon enquiry at the school, it was revealed that she never turned up.

They later shifted their focus to trace her in the village.

One of the family members found the deceased’ body in the house of her step mother. The house is situated a few meters away from her parents’ homestead.

Local Assistant Chief Clement Owuodho said the girl's body was bruised around the stomach and had stab wound that appeared to have been inflicted by a knife.

Various items including a kitchen knife, a match box and a plate of ‘githeri’ were found on the floor next to the body.

The administrator said the minor is suspected to have taken her own life but it was not clear what could have prompted her to do so.

“Her parents said the girl had not shown any signs of depression prior to the incident,” said Owuodho.

Rachuonyo North Police commander Sarah Chumo said police were investigating the matter. She said police will probe the girl's school home to help them establish the cause of the death.

The body was moved to Kendu Adventist Hospital Mortuary for postmortem.
