Man killed, six injured in border row

Tension remained high along the Kisumu-Nandi border yesterday following the killing of a 41-year-old man and the injuring of six people, among them an epileptic boy, on Tuesday.

The attack was allegedly carried out by members of the Nandi community. Tom Abuodha was hacked to death on Jaramogi Farm at a site where sand is harvested.

The chaos, which erupted on Tuesday afternoon in Miwani was said to have been triggered by the theft of 14 cows in Kabar.

Joshua Onyango, a friend of Mr Abuodha, said he (Abuodha) was approached by three men armed with arrows asking where he was going to sell all the sand he had harvested.

"They came and asked for my phone, I told them I did not have one and they told me they were out to revenge the death of one of their own who was killed a month ago," said Mr Onyango.

A man suspected to be a cattle thief was shot dead by police a month ago, and yesterday's attack seemed to have been a retaliatory one.

Onyango later excused himself to go and have tea. On his way, he met Abuodha heading to the site to purchase sand. He tried warning him of the danger ahead, but he defied him.

It was only when Onyango did not see Abuodha come back, that he reported the matter to the chief who later alerted the police who went to the site, only to find his body in a sugar plantation with deep panga cuts, and his legs and hands tied together.

Other victims, Ainda Omoso and Edward Ochieng, suffered panga cuts and arrow wounds.
