ODM 'rebels' laud move to take them back

A section of ODM leaders from the county have voiced support for the party's move to recall members perceived to be rebels.

MPs Millie Odhiambo of Mbita and James Rege of Karachuonyo as well as former Rangwe MP Martin Ogindo, said the move will ensure the party gets more membership and becomes more vibrant ahead of the 2017 General Election.

Mr Rege said the decision was an indication that democracy was beginning to find room in ODM.

"What has happened is a clear picture that ODM has factored in our concerns for ensuring democratic space prevails as we have been preaching. I am supporting it because it is a good gesture for prosperity of the party," Rege said.

Rege, who supported Maendeleo Democratic Party's candidate Phillip Okundi in the recent Homa Bay senatorial by-election, said he had been talking to ODM's National Elections Board to ensure the party conducts free and fair nominations.

Ms Odhiambo said the move will see that everybody is brought on board in steering the strength of the party in readiness for upcoming elections.

"This is a sign of obedience and recognition of members. The move will ensure all members give views in charting the way forward for the party," Odhiambo said.

She denied the existence of rebellion among ODM members in the Homa Bay branch saying those branded as rebels and the defectors were just but aggrieved by the manner in which the party nominations were done.

Mr Ogindo, who contested the Homa Bay Town parliamentary seat on a Federal Party of Kenya ticket, promised to stay in ODM and serve its interests.

"I'm happy ODM has given us a second chance to be bona fide members," Ogindo said.
