MP: Don't politicise Sh4.5b irrigation project

Nyatike MP Omondi Anyanga has asked politicians in Migori County not to politicise a Sh4.5 billion irrigation project set for Lower River Kuja.

He said once complete, the project, which was started during the previous regime, will help create employment, increase yields and alleviate poverty.

"This project should not be politicised at the expense of boosting food security," Anyanga said.

The MP accused some politicians in the region of being hell-bent on retrogressive politics at the expense of development.

Anyanga said although some residents affected by the project are yet to be fully compensated, the matter is with the Ministry of Agriculture and will soon be resolved.

Better agriculture

The irrigation project covers six locations and 13 sub-locations in Nyatike and Karungu divisions and is expected to enable utilisation of land resources within the Lower Kuja Basin through supply of water for irrigation to over 7,717 hectares for increased agricultural production.

It is estimated that over 20,000 residents will benefit from the project and already some 2,797 farmers have registered to be part of the scheme.
