Kisii, Kenya: Ford People candidate in the Bonchari Constituency by-election Zebedeo Opore Monday emerged the winner the highly contested poll that had attracted seven candidates.

Opore, ODM’s John Oyioka and Wiper’s Charles Onyancha are some of the candidates of the parliamentary seat that fell vacant after Court of Appeal nullified the election of Oyioka.

Opore took the lead with 10,947 votes, followed by  Oyioka 6,977 and Onyacha came in third with 5,171 in all 81 polling centres.

Other candidates in the poll are David Ogega (Democratic Party) who garnered 683 votes, Paul Matagaro (Kenya National Congress) 545, Geoffrey Omwando (Kenya Social Congress) 84 an Charles Mogaka (Kenya Labour Party) 42.

A total of 673 votes were rejected in the mini-poll that registered a 61% voter turnout.

Results from polling stations were being transmitted electronically through the results transmission system (RTS) to the tallying centre at Itierio Boys Secondary school.

Electronic voter identification devices (EVIDs) were used to ensure there is no double voting.

No hitches were reported with the use of voter identification devices. "We have the EVIDs and we expect they will work 100 per cent. We will be streaming the results as they come," said Peter Resa, the constituency returning officer.

The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) officers at the polling stations were required to send the results on phone then later carry the signed forms to the tallying centre.
