Nyamira,Kenya:Criminal investigations officers in Nyamira have arrested a woman who has allegedly conned residents by either promising them a job or provision of loans.

Police are now investigating a syndicate that has been defrauding locals of thousands of shillings with fake job offers at the governor’s office.

Last Friday, at least four job seekers reported to the governor’s office armed with “appointment letters” but were shocked to learn they had been conned. Governor John Nyagarama’s security officers detained the job seekers for several hours as police officers investigated the matter.

The women told the police, a woman in her twenties gave them the letters. Each anticipated to earn Sh23,000 as detailed in the letters. The victims said they had given the woman between Sh3,000-Sh5,000 each to secure the appointments.

Nyamira District CID officer James Tali and his county boss Seif Mbaruk said the suspect was masquerading as an employee of the governor’s office to fleece unsuspecting employment seekers.

The suspect claimed she received the appointment letters from her senior at the governor’s office but when the CID officers went with her to Nyagarama’s office, she failed to identify her accomplice.

County Secretary James Ntabo denied the suspect was an employee with them.

But the suspect insisted she works as an accountant in the county government and claimed her other accomplice, besides those in the governor’s office, is in Borabu district.
