Garissa County Governor Nathif Jama Adam has called for unity among local leaders in northern Kenya in fighting poverty through development projects.

Nathif has particularly urged County Representatives and other officials of the County Assembly to co-operate so as to speed up their development agenda.

He said that like other counties in northern Kenya, Garissa lagged in development and advised that its leadership need not to waste time but remain focused in achieving socio-economic growth.

“It is paramount for us to be proactive and quickly develop our county,” said the Governor, who spoke after a planning committee meeting, which has ordered to convene a security forum starting today. Security officials, political elites, religious leaders and professionals will take part in the forum to be held at Nomad Hotel in Garissa Township.  The Governor said his administration will quickly revise and revitalise the revenue collection base so as to fully embark in proper service delivery to the residents.

Nathif said he had already put proper structure to kick start working modalities where all stakeholders will be involved, adding the focus will mostly be help and encourage fresh-food producers and livestock farmers.

During his inaugural swearing ceremony, the Governor unveiled an 11-point development plan. Food security, which he says is a fundamental factor to peace and unity in the county which can be achieved through proper attention to agricultural production, topped his five-year blueprint.
