A tout at Nairobi’s Afya House stage has pleaded guilty to causing a disturbance by engaging in an altercation with a fellow tout over a passenger.
Paul Machuki Obuor, who works with North Rift shuttle, committed the offence on March 27, when he abused Samwel Macharia Ndirangu of North Rift Express with unprintable words and pulled off his wife’s kilemba after he convinced a passenger to board his vehicle.
According to court records, Obuor harassed and embarrassed Ndirangu, saying since he was Akorino by faith, he ought to be “serving the Lord” in church like the rest, rather than carrying luggage for people at the stage.
But this did not deter Ndirangu from carrying on with his work.
Obuor then got angry and went ahead to unleash swear words that left onlookers in disbelief.
He is also said to have sworn to kill Ndirangu for being an obstacle to his work.
Ndirangu reported the matter at Kamukunji police station, leading to Obuor’s arrest.
In court, Ndirangu pleaded for forgiveness, claiming he acted out of provocation.
“I acted out of provocation, because Ndirangu, who I don’t relate well with, managed to take away a customer. I am asking for forgiveness and being a law-abiding citizen, I swear I will not repeat the same mistake. The Lord is my witness. I am a sole breadwinner and putting me behind the bars will render my two children and wife helpless,” he said.
The court ordered a presentence report on May 3.
