Crunch time in fourth round of Orange Mabingwa

As was expected, the quality of play during the fourth round of the Orange Mabingwa under 13 Football Tournament is exceptional — as only the best teams managed to proceed to this all important round.

The fourth round, which will run for the next five weeks, began on September 24, 2011, at the New Kihumbuini Primary School Grounds in Kangemi, Nairobi. A total of 24 boy’s teams and 16 girl’s teams are expected competing in this round robin format, all drawn from different public primary schools in Nairobi.

Among the most exciting matches of the first weekend of play were between Loresho Primary and Kabete Vet Lab Primary School, with the former winning the match by three goals to none. Loresho made easy work of this match with their star scorer Elias Onchari opening the volley of goals with a double in the second and tenth minutes of play. Brian Nyangechi followed this effort with two goals in the in the third and 36th minutes.

The girl’s derby was also as exciting with the hosts, New Kihumbuini’s girls’ team, beating neighbouring Muguga Green by two goals to none. The fast paced match sapped the energy out of the referee, Lollin Aloo, as she tried to keep up with the young stars. New Kihumbuini’s star player Esther Murugi continued with her goal-scoring streak, netting in the first goal, followed later in the 42nd minute by Courtney Wangari.

This round will also act as another elimination round — only the best eight teams in both the boys and girls derbies will proceed to the ultimate stage of the tournament.

"At this stage, the level of competition will be a notch higher and we are expecting to see players bring on their A-game; knowing that any small mistake on the pitch could cost them the chance to win the Orange Mabingwa title," said the coordinator Gerald Chege.

Next weekend’s games will be played at the Mbotela Grounds, along Jogoo Road. Come and see Kenya’s next football stars in action.
