Farmers advised to deposit wheat cash in banks

Rift valley;Kenya: Wheat farmers have been advised to open bank accounts as the harvesting season nears. Police said this would deter robbers who are lying in waiting as the farmers receive the cash.

Police have also directed proprietors of lodgings in Narok town to keep records of their clients in a bid to tame crime during the harvesting period.

Further, both farmers and businessmen were advised to bank their money after every transaction to avoid being robbed or conned by the hundreds of commercial sex workers who have flocked the town to cash in on what is popularly known as "brown gold".

"All those involved in wheat trade should open bank accounts to avoid losing the money to robbers and prostitutes," said Paul Letting, the Narok North police boss.

Mr Letting said all unaccompanied women should not be admitted into the lodgings, warning that action would be taken against owners who would not keep the records.
