Youth to secure jobs in slum upgrade project

More than 1,200 youth in Tetu constituency are set to get employment opportunities in the ongoing informal settlement and civil work project under the National Youth Service (NYS).

The youth, mostly from the three sub-locations of Aguthi–Gaki, Dedan Kimathi and the Wamagana, on Tuesday turned up in large numbers for selection during the commissioning of the project.

Speaking at the function, area MP Ndung'u Gethenji said the Jubilee government was in the process of creating 500,000 jobs before the end of its term in line with its country wide vision of empowering the youth.

"This is one of the many promises that the Government made to the youth, and is currently implementing them one by one," he said.

Mr Gethenji observed that the youth are the pillars and strength of the society and that by empowering them, the Government was seeking to tackle perennial problems associated with the youth like alcoholism and drug addiction.

The MP said under the programme, the youth will be expected to undertake community based projects.
