The senators demanded that Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i, Inspector General of Police Hillary Mutyambai and Director of Criminal Investigations George Kinoti be put to task to explain what they are doing to curb insecurity.

They cited the recent attack on Lamu Senator Anwar Loitiptip and his fiancée Agnes Saumu Mbuvi at Memphis Club in Kasarani, Nairobi, last Saturday.

Majority Leader Kipchumba Murkomen (Elgeyo/Marakwet) raised the matter and sought the House’s direction through the security committee chaired by Garissa Senator Yusuf Haji.

He questioned why suspects arrested in connection with the attack on Loitiptip were released on "a paltry Sh20,000 as bond".

"In the past, suspects would be held for days, even weeks, to facilitate investigations. Even the money paid as bail would be very high. I wonder why the suspects arrested in the senator’s case were released,” said Murkomen.

Minority Whip Mutula Kilonzo Jnr (Makueni) termed the attack an attempted murder.

“He did not provoke anybody and I believe he was set up for beating. The security committee should take the matter seriously. Speaker Ken Lusaka, too, should speak boldly against the attack,” said Mr Kilonzo Jnr.

Senators Aaron Cheruiyot (Kericho), James Orengo (Siaya), John Kinyua (Laikipia), Christopher Lagat (Bomet), Ledama ole Kina (Narok), Samuel Poghisio (West Pokto) and Catherine Musuruve (Nominated) accused security agencies of laxity in curbing insecurity.
