Five suspects killed in Nairobi in war on crime

NAIROBI: Five suspected thugs were killed in separate robbery attempts in Nairobi in the war on crime.
Police say two of the suspects were shot dead while two others were lynched by a mob.

The first incident happened along Juja Road where one suspect was killed in a robbery and a pistol found on him. Nairobi police boss Japheth Koome said the second one happened in Savanah where a gang had attacked a Coca-Cola depot and robbed the owner of Sh10,000 and other valuables.

As they were leaving, they were confronted by police and one was shot dead and a pistol found on him.
Koome said the 60-year-old owner of the depot was not injured in the incident and that the others who escaped are being sought.

"They had also been robbing residents of their valuables and cash when police were alerted. We are looking for the accomplices who escaped from the scene," said Koome.

He said two suspects were lynched in Kiambiu slums after they had robbed motorbikes from riders in Buruburu area. Koome said they discourage mob lynching of suspects and warned those caught will be charged in a court of law with murder.

A fifth suspect had been killed Tuesday night shot dead in a botched robbery at Kariobangi Roundabout, Nairobi.

Police say the suspect was in the company of three others and had been attacking and robbing pedestrians when an alarm was raised.

The other suspects managed to escape on foot. Police say the bodies were moved to mortuary and hunt on others is ongoing.

And a police officer was shot and seriously wounded in a robbery and carjacking incident in a matatu along Juja Road, Nairobi.

His gun was snatched from him in the Wednesday 6 am incident. Witnesses said the officer did not manage to get the weapon as the gang shot at him as he tried to reach it.

The officer was riding in the matatu to his work place at the Central police station when a gang that had carjacked the vehicle struck shooting him in the stomach.

Police say the gang of four escaped soon after the incident and a hunt on them is ongoing.
Several passengers were robbed of their valuables and cash by the gang who struck as the matatu raced to the central business district.

This is the third such incident to happen in the area in less than a month. A bodyguard attached to leader of Majority in the House Aden Duale was shot and wounded before being robbed of his gun in Eastleigh in an ambush.

Earlier on, another officer was shot dead inside a matatu in Eastleigh in a robbery after a gang realized who he was. The killers were later shot dead in Mathare slums in a police operation. Those responsible for the shooting of Duale's guard are yet to be arrested.

On Thursday, a police operation was mounted in the area in vain. The injured officer is admitted to a city hospital in a stable condition.

Cases of armed robberies have been fluctuating in the city with police saying they are in charge.
