Huruma building victims get Sh6 million

Victims of the collapsed Huruma building have received Sh6 million from the Government to help them start a new life.

Public Service Cabinet Secretary Sicily Kariuki said the money will go into easing their relocation to safer houses after the Huruma Social Hall camp where they were housed was closed officially yesterday.

Some Sh600,000 will be used to pay for deposits and two months' rent of the victims, Sh1.2 million will purchase household items and Sh1 million on stationary and uniforms for school going children.

"We will also give every bereaved family Sh20,000 towards the funeral arrangements," she said.

Earlier, Kenya Red Cross gave 152 households Sh15,000 each to get new places, with Nairobi Governor Evans Kidero's wife Susan (on behalf of all 47 first ladies) giving Sh10,000 for the same.

Nairobi County has also pledged Sh50,000 for every bereaved family.
