Court extends hearing of Walter Barasa’s extradition case to November

NAIROBI, KENYA: Journalist Walter Barasa’s extradition case will now be heard on November 11th 2013, Principal High Court Justice Richard Mwongo has ruled.

 Justice Mwongo has also extended Barasa’s round the clock State security until the extradition case is determined.  During the Friday morning session Mwongo instructed the advocates present on how the case will proceed.

The International Criminal Court (ICC) issued an arrest warrant for the Eldoret-based journalist on allegations of witness tampering. The Hague based court requested the Government to hand over the journalist.

Barasa through his lawyer Kibe Mungai, Barasa challenged the legality and procedure on which extradition proceedings against him were effected.

 He also claimed that due to his Kenyan citizenship, the matter should be heard in Kenyan courts.
