State audits operations at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport to improve efficiency

Nairobi, Kenya: The Government has launched an audit of operations at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport.

It is aimed at boosting efficiency and movement of cargo and people through its facilities.

Cabinet Secretary for Transport Michael Kamau said Monday that all relevant Government departments had met to discuss how the value of the airport as the aviation hub of the region might be boosted.

Among the agencies represented Monday included Immigration, Kenya Airports Authority, Kenya Revenue Authority, Kenya Bureau of Standards among others to see how they can work together to streamline the operations of the airport.

Improvements

The initiative is modelled alongside a similar audit carried out at the port of Mombasa last month, where points of delays in movement of goods were identified and ironed out.

“We want to see what major improvements can be made on the services without necessarily putting in money. We are going to have drastic changes in the next two months in the operations of the airport. The changes will be announced soon after consultations are completed,” Kamau said.

Kenya Airports Authority Managing Director Stephen Gichuki said the new parking bay at the airport is expected to be completed in a month’s time and will accommodate 1,900 vehicles

He said the main structure was complete and was only awaiting relevant equipment involving security, air-conditioning and baggage systems. He added that reorganisation of the existing terminals to maximise use of space will begin in January next year.
