NAIROBI, KENYA: A policewoman was Monday night robbed of her gun in an attack by a gang in Kinyago slums, Nairobi.

The cop was in the company of two other officers and had responded to a distress call at about 11 pm when they were ambushed.

Police say she lost an AK47 rifle that had 20 bullets to a gang of five that attacked them.

Nairobi Area police boss Benson Kibui said the gang of five were terrorizing and robbing residents when an alarm was raised.

“As the officers responded, they were ambushed on the way. They targeted the female officer and grabbed her gun after flooring her before escaping on foot,” said Kibui.

Kinyago slums that lies behind Dandora is touted as one of the most dangerous areas in Nairobi.

A major hunt that was launched later on did not bear any fruits. Police say they are yet to recover the weapon and a hunt on the gang is ongoing.

Crime has been on the rise in the city and at the weekend alone, five people including two police officers were killed in separate gun related attacks.

Police have also been on target with at least three being killed in less than a month in Nairobi alone. Two were killed at the weekend while one had been killed last month in South C area.
