Bright and disabled girl calls for support to enable her join form one

The fate of a 15-year-old bright pupil from West Pokot hangs in the balance as her guardians are unable to raise fees for her to join Form One.

Esther Akude, who scored 357 marks at Alale Girls Primary School, is set to join Turkana Girls High School after emerging among the top performers in her county.

She is now appealing to well-wishers to support her complete secondary school and achieve her dream of becoming a doctor.

Esther is frustrated since her guardian cannot afford Sh53,000 school fees required for her to start high school education.

The pupil who claimed to have been rejected by her parents after escaping early marriage courtesy of her disability has no fee to study like other girls.

She says she aspires to be a doctor after completing her studies. She states that in future, she wants to play a role of mentoring other girls from remote areas to empower themselves through education.

“I know I have a bright future, my age-mates are now married off some even have 5 children, girls from the Pokot community are still grappling with forced early marriages and Female Genital Mutilation (FGM), which have hampered girl child education in the region,” she said.

Esther who comes from the remote parts of Alale in Kacheliba, appeals for well-wishers from county leadership to national government or NGOs to aid her fulfill her dreams.

“I escaped from forceful marriage just to be a doctor in future. The only way out of poverty and give back to my community is to excel in my academics. Am determined if I get support,” She said.
