Matiang’i asks IEBC to set election before October 17

Education CS Fred Matiang'i

Education Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i has released this year's national examination dates. The Kenya Certificate of Secondary Examination (KCSE) will begin on October 23 with the oral tests while the written exam will take place between November 6 and 29, 2017.

Kenya Certificate of Primary Examination (KCPE) candidates will sit their exams on November 1 and 2. The rehearsals will be done on October 31.

The Education Minister also urged  the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) to set the date of the repeat presidential election at least a week before October 17 to enable students have ample time to prepare for their examination.

Matiang’i said that if the IEBC was unable to consider the proposed dates, his ministry would reschedule the examination timetable. That will, however, disrupt the Ministry of Education’s annual calendar and offset events such as release of the examination dates and placement of Form One students in 2018.

The Supreme Court on Friday nullified August 8 presidential election and ordered  IEBC to supervise a fresh one within 60 days (by November 1) following the success of a petition filed by the National Super Alliance (NASA) that President Uhuru Kenyatta’s win.
