Nairobi City Hall: Employees to spend more time in police cells over Sh7 million scam

Nairobi, Kenya: Police are seeking five more days to detain seven Nairobi County employees who were found with more than Sh7.8 million in their possession by Nairobi county Governor Mike Mbuvi Sonko on August 23, 2017.

Reuben Njuguna Gachukia, Luke Mugo Gatumu, Maurice Okere Ochieng, Nixon Otieno Awuor, Shaban Asman, Bedan Ndegwa Wambui, Chrispine Otieno Oyiro were arrested on August 29, 2017 at around 6.30 pm after a follow up to a report made by the Governor.

The seven, Chief Cashier, a finance officer, Head of Treasury, Head of Revenue, Second-in-charge of revenue collection, Head of bank reconciliations, and assistant cashier respectively were found with the money in their offices of which they ought to have deposited by closure of business on August 22, 2017 as a matter of procedure.

The seven were charged that being employees of the county government, they abused their authority by failing to bank revenue on August 22.

The court heard that the investigating team was yet to recover revenue collection books, banking record books, banking slips and computers from the suspects.

Resident magistrate Sinkiyian Tokibo will deliver the ruling on further detention today at 3.30 pm.
