Blood shortage hits Busia

There is a serious shortage of blood in hospitals across the county due to the growing demand for the lifesaving liquid.

At least 12 patients awaiting surgery at the county general hospital have to wait a little longer.

Kenya National Blood Transfusion Service (KNBTS) has called on locals to volunteer and donate blood to help save lives.

KNBTS official David Bulimu told The Standard that the hospital requires at least 300 pints for the 12 patients.

According to him, the hospital has a paltry 16 pints terming it a drop in the ocean.

“The situation is bad because all health facilities across the county are affected,” said Mr Bulimu.

“We sympathise with our patients, particularly those scheduled for gynaecological operations, they must continue waiting until we have enough blood," he said.

Gynecological surgery refers to surgery on the female reproductive system. It includes procedures for benign conditions, cancer, infertility, and incontinence.

Similar situation

It is not the first time the county has found itself in a similar situation. In May last year, patients had to be referred to Kakamega and Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital for blood transfusion. Six children died as a result of blood shortage then.

The situation affected services in private and public hospitals.

“There is need to find a long-term solution to the problem otherwise we shall continue experiencing blood shortage all the time,” said KNBTS official.

At least 11 sub-county hospitals including Alupe, Khunyangu, Kocholia and Nangina Mission Hospital, depend on the KNBTS satellite blood bank.

The county hospital consumes 102 pints of blood daily.

“Hopefully, Kenyans of goodwill will heed to our call and come out to donate the blood to save lives,” said Bulimu.

KNBTS has erected a tent near Catholic Church in town for people to donate blood.
