Kenya Airports Authority (KAA) will expand Kabunde airstrip to boost tourism sector.
The airport serves Flight 540 and caters for passengers from neighbouring Kisii, Bomet, Migori and parts of Tanzania.
KAA Chief Executive Officer Johnny Anderson met Homa Bay Governor Cyprian Awiti before touring the facility.
The airstrip had been neglected until February 2016, when it was re-opened for commercial flights after refurbishment by the county government.
Andersen said they had finalised plans to expand the runway to accommodate bigger planes.
Part of the civil work will include improvement of the terminal and runway, which is 1,200 metres but will be extended to between 1,600 to 1,700 metres.
