We should always listen to Kibaki’s peace messages ahead of polls

The conference attended by President Kibaki, parliamentarians and business people early last week was timely and a step in the right direction. The need for peace and stability during the electioneering period and transition cannot be overemphasised. Our politicians should be cognisant with the rule of law and desist from making drama out of their political rivals.

The President has said umpteenth times that he is not drumming support for any presidential contender and he will immediately hand over the presidency to whoever wins. But this seems to have fallen on deaf ears as the fierce political rivalry for supremacy intensifies as the dreaded moment of General Election draws near.

Political divisiveness, animosity and hate speech were some of the factors that contributed to the post-election skirmishes in 2007/2008. Voters should be wary of those who are hell-bent to cause mayhem through their utterances.
