Kenya Oaks set for Sunday at Ngong

By Windsor Lass

Our most sincere condolences are showered upon Mike and Linda Garner, who recently lost their daughter, Chania, with a brain cyst.

Linda is the OBTS active secretary. Mike has been a jockey, trainer, owner, and, three-time winner of the Grand National on Louis.

Chania’s sister, Sharon, was a brilliant show-jumping rider and jockey, until spinal issues aborted her mission to continue.

Linda’s sister, Patsy Sercombe, has been leading trainer severally, and, won the April 11 Derby with Golden Ash. Linda’s horse, Chinook, clamped the 2009 Oaks.

The Kenya Oaks scheduled for May 16 is now set fast for next Sunday. The whole programme has been included with Champagne Stakes and Civil Service Gold Cup.

Stewards are moving end of season finalities foward, with closure August 8. Youki San had to be withdrawn from the Oaks Classic with an injury, leaving the exalted Caricature and Lightfoot, to sort out a probable photo-finish.

Killing jockeys

Meanwhile, Peter Brown, 37, has been found guilty of killing apprentice jockeys Jamie Kyne and Jan Wilson in a revenge attack on their block of flats.

The teenagers died as fire swept through the building, North Yorkshire, September 5, last year.

Brown, showing no signs of remorse, was cleared of murder, but has been convicted on two counts of manslaughter.

Any punishment won’t be enough for the loss and suffering of those involved. Only memories are in tact.

Kyne, 18, from County Galway, and, Wilson, 19, from Angus, died of smoke inhalation, plus severe burns. The jockeys were trapped in flat five of Buckrose Court, as flames raged uncontrollably.

During the four-week trial, Brown who lived in an annexe off Buckrose Court at that time, acted from revenge, after being refused entry to a party in flat four.

This was exactly below where the two jockeys died.
