Class Eight pupil in police custody for killing his younger brother in Nyamira

A 16-year-old boy is in police custody in Nyamira after he confessed to killing his younger brother aged 14 following a dispute over land in Kebirigo, Nyamira county.

County Commander of Police Catherine Mugwe said the two blood brothers differed on Friday over a piece of land before the suspect attacked the deceased with a jembe.

The suspect, a Standard Eight pupil at a local primary school is reported to have hit the deceased on the back of his head using a hand hoe, killing him instantly.

"The suspect wanted the same a piece of land where his younger brother had planted kales for nappier grass. He proceeded to plant the grass within the vegetables, something which did not please the brother leading to a heated exchange," Mugwe said.

After killing him, he proceeded to bury the body secretly in a pit which he had earlier excavated to plant a banana sucker where it lay overnight.

He later exhumed the body and abandoned it at the scene where the murder was committed.

He later reported the matter to the mother who raised alarm, attracting the attention of the villagers

The deceased was a Standard Six pupil at the same school as his brother.

According to Kebirigo Chief Robert Okioga, the two boys live with their sickling mother who is the breadwinner after their father left home.

The juvenile is being held at Nyamira Police Station and according to Mugwe, police were piecing together the incidences and any obtainable evidence with a view of charging the youth before a court of law.

"Investigations are going on and for now, we are holding the mother and the suspected killer as we prepare to take them to court," she said.
