Kenyan who failed to self-quarantine traced to city hotel

A Kenyan businessman who had traveled from Lisbon, Portugal and failed to self-quarantine has been questioned by police.

Yesterday, police who were accompanied by the ministry of health officials visited the trader in his room at a local hotel and questioned him.

The health officials took blood samples from him. The man has now been quarantined. The hotel's doctor has been roped in to help monitor him.

The health officials said they were tipped off by an anonymous caller who said he was aware that the trader had travelled to Europe and came back three days.

The caller said the man had not taken measures to safeguard his friends and family. He added that he grew concerned that after the trader started visiting city entertainment joints without getting a check-up.

Health Cabinet Secretary Mutahi Kagwe has emphasised that it is mandatory for Kenyans coming from other countries to sign a legal form at the airport to confirm that they are going for self-quarantine.

“It is compulsory to self-quarantine. The Government can forcefully do it if one has shown that they can’t do it,” he said.

Kagwe told Kenyans to keep watch and report people who are not practising self-quarantine since they are a threat to the fight against the virus. So far, 18 people have been quarantined at Mbagathi hospital.
