IG Joseph Boinnet, his Ugandan counterpart Kayihura visit Migingo Island

A Kenyan police officer stands looking at Migingo Island whose ownership is under contention between Kenyan and Uganda.

NAIROBI: Kenya police boss Joseph Boinnet and his Ugandan counterpart Kele Kayihura have visited Migingo Island in Lake Victoria and held a joint security meeting with locals and police.

The two flew there on Wednesday for the mission and assured locals of their security.

The island has been in ownership contention with Uganda claiming it belongs to her. Kenya too says it belongs to her. Fishermen from Kenya have in the past complained of harassment from the Ugandan side and sought the help of Kenyan authorities. Boinnet and Kayihura flew in a Kenya police chopper to Muhuru Bay before they rode in a boat to the rocky island Wednesday. They later flew back to Nairobi.
