Former President Mwai Kibaki, Nakuru residents bid farewell to veteran politician Mark Mwithaga

Former President Mwai Kibaki has eulogised late veteran politician Mark Mwithaga as a remarkable leader of great repute. Speaking during the memorial service of the former Nakuru Town MP, Kibaki who was close friend to the deceased, spoke of nostalgic memories.

"I have known Mark and his family for many years. Throughout the period I have known him, Mark has, without fail, distinguished himself as a devout Catholic, astute political leader, committed family man and reliable friend. I will forever remember his courage and sense of duty to courses that dignify humanity," the former Head of State said.

Kibaki was Mwithaga's best man during his wedding in 1970.

Hundreds of mourners gathered at the Christ The King Cathedral in Nakuru County to bid farewell to the celebrated freedom hero. Mwithaga made history by being the first person in Kenya to be elected as a Member of Parliament while in prison. He died on August 2 at Nakuru Heart Clinic following heart complications.

Devolution Cabinet Secretary Mwangi Kiunjuri read a condolence message from President Uhuru Kenyatta which said in part: "In his death, the country has lost one of its pioneer fighters who championed democracy, inclusivity and equity in a risky era...".

Also present was Cabinet Secretary Public Service, Youth and Gender Affairs Sicily Kariuki, Nakuru Governor Kinuthia Mbugua, his deputy Joseph Ruto among others. Mwithaga was laid to rest at the Nakuru North Cemetery in accordance to his wishes.
