Case against MPs Alfred Keter and Sonia Birdi adjourned

A Naivasha court has rejected an application by MPs Alfred Keter (Nandi Hills) and Sonia Birdi (nominated) to be given a copy of an agreement between SGS Limited and Kenya National Highway Authority.

And the case failed to proceed after the defence applied for an adjournment to allow Birdi to seek treatment. The duo face two joint charges of incitement to disobedience of the law and intimidating public officers by invoking the President's name.

Naivasha Chief Magistrate Peter Gesora said it was upon the defence to use their own means to seek the document and not rely on the prosecution.

Earlier, the legislators' lawyer Okong'o Omogeni had argued that the defence was not ready to proceed without the document.

"The law is very clear that the defence should be supplied with all the necessary documents and this contract is vital for us," he said.

Omogeni said efforts to get the contract through the office of the Director of Public Prosecutions had been fruitless.

SGS is the company contracted to manage weigh bridges across the country.

The case was adjourned until September 3.
