Former President Daniel arap Moi has consoled the family and friends of former Kenya Commercial Bank chairman Benjamin Kipkorir, who was buried yesterday at his home in Elgeyo Marakwet County.
In a condolence message read by Kanu chairman and Baringo Senator Gideon Moi, the former President described Kipkorir as having made huge contribution in education, professional service and leadership.
Dr Kipkorir died on Wednesday morning in Nairobi.
“Death has robbed Kenya of a great and brilliant son. During this time of mourning, I pray to God to give the bereaved family fortitude to bear the loss. It is the Almighty who can offer true solace,” read the message.
The former President said he knew Kipkorir since 1950s when the latter was his student at Tambach before going to Alliance High School, Makerere and Cambridge universities. Moi said Kipkorir, born in 1939 in Elgeyo Markwet County, made tremendous contribution by promoting education.
He said one of the legacies the late leaves behind is manifest in the number of students he taught at the University of Nairobi, who continue to impact positively in areas of development.
“Kipkorir rendered valuable contribution to the education sector. There are so many students who were taught by the late in all parts of the country and beyond, serving in various capacities and thus forming a strong human resource base,” he said.
Moi said as the chairman of KCB, the late spearheaded an ambitious programme to open branches all over the country.
Various engagements
He said while teaching at the university, the late was on many occasions called upon to serve in various government commissions, tasks that he performed with zeal and professionalism.
Because of his dedication, he was appointed in Moi’s government as a Kenya’s ambassador to the US, a position he held responsibly through enhanced diplomatic ties between the two countries.
“I appointed Kipkorir to represent the country in Washington, he did not disappoint, but rather performed well in strengthening the bonds of friendship and co-operation between the two countries,” he said.
Kipkorir also served on several panels, notably the Armed Forces Pay and Allowance Review Board among others.
