Samburu, Kenya: A nine year-old boy is recuperating at a Maralal district hospital after he was attacked by a drunk hyena.

The wild animal had helped itself on illicit brew that was poured by officers from the provincial administration during a raid at Kisima village in Samburu county. The boy suffered serious injuries on both arms and left leg.

Officers from the local administration camp under the command of county commissioner Mr Wildfred Nyagwanga were conducting a crack down on illicit brews at the village when they poured litres of chang'aa, which the hyena consumed before the attack.

Kenya Wildlife Service Officers who were summoned, tracked down the wild animal and killed it. Senior KWS Warden Dominic Wambua said hyenas had invaded the area but promised residents that the organization would drive them away.

"The hyenas have been attracted by the hundreds of litres of the illicit brew that was poured by the administration police but we will drive them away to keep the place safe," the officer told the Standard on Saturday.
