The Coastal girls, who are making their maiden appearance in the games, upstaged the Nyanza counterparts by handing them a 22-11 drubbing.

Coached by Thomas King’oo, Shimba Hills seemed well prepared for the games and are likely to continue causing shock waves if their yesterday’s performance is anything to go by.

Jane Waithera emerged the top scorer for the winners with 11 goals, while Michelle Adhiambo contributed seven more. Dorcas Onyango and Evelyn Owuor scored three goals each as Caroline Akinyi scored five for the losers.

In another girls’ handball match, former champions Gataragwa from Central had a faulty start after they were beaten by Mukumu of Western Province 37-14. Faith Mikhala and Eunice Kairuki scored 16 and seven goals for Mukumu and Gataragwa respectively.

Comfortable lead

In boys’ handball, Kitany of Rift Valley handed Garissa High School from North Eastern a 40-9 thrashing after taking a comfortable 17-5 lead at half time. Keith Kosgei, Mathew Kirui and Edwin Bisem scored 11, eight and six respectively for Kitany, while Aden Abdi netted four for his side.

In another handball match, Kamukunji of Nairobi beat Kibirichia from Eastern 30-16 after leading 16-9 at the breather. Martin Nguli and Joseph Ndirangu bagged nine and seven respectively for the winners, while Kenneth Munene and Eric Maingi had five goals each for Kibirichia.

In netball, Obambo of Nyanza started well by beating Central’s Tetu 28-21. The victors led 19-9 at half time. Millicent Adhiambo and Caroline Adhiambo scored 15 and 13 respectively for Obambo, while Sarah Wachira and Sarah Mtui netted 11 and 10 in that order.

In another netball match, former queens Manor House of Rift Valley whitewashed hapless Furaha from North Eastern 86-4 in a one-sided match. The North Eastern girls did not give any resistance with opponents scoring at will. Manor House’s Winnie Wafula emerged top scorer with 41 goals.
