Nairobi Simba retain Agnelo de Souza Memorial hockey title in Mombasa

Nairobi Simba retained the Agnelo de Souza Memorial hockey title as the three-day event ended on Monday at the Mombasa Institute Sports Club.

Simba recaptured the title after beating Wazalendo 1-0 in the final.

Asif Shah scored the lone goal in the 11th minute after Brian Musasia put him through.

Wazalendo tried in vain through Titus Ngona and Job Omondi to cancel the margin.

En route to the final Simba hit Kenya Police 1-0, while Wazalendo needed flicks after a 1-1 draw to win the match 2-1.

In the women’s category, reigning national hockey champions Telkom Orange were crowned the new queens after amassing 11 points.

In the deciding match, Telkom Orange drew 0-0 with Sliders to bag 11 points.

Usiu finished ahead of Sliders courtesy of goal aggregate.

Usiu defeated the University of Nairobi 3-0 in their last match. Pauline Naise scored the opener in the ninth minute before Lorraine Nondi added the second in the 13th minute as Beatrice Mbugua added the third in the 24th minute.

In other matches, Telkom Orange clobbered University of Nairobi 4-0.

Orange boast of having the bulk of their players in the national team, which is preparing for the November 18-24 Africa Cup of Nations, which will also act as the World Cup qualifiers. The World Cup will be held in the Netherlands next year.

The continental tournament, which has attracted four men’s and five women’s teams, was postponed last month due to the Westgate Mall terror attack.

Jacky Mwangi scored a hat-trick. She  scored the opener in the 15th minute before sounding the boards three minutes later.

Rose Mbulo added the third in the 22nd minute before Jacky completed her hat-trick in the 25th minute.

In other women’s matches played on a round robin basis, Slider beat St Johns Kaloleni 1-0, University of Nairobi defeated St John Kaloleni 2-0, Usiu stopped Mombasa Sports Club 2-0, while Sliders drew 0-0 with Mombasa Sports Club.

In the men’s matches, titleholders Nairobi Simba made it to the quarterfinals after they drew 1-1 with University of Nairobi.

The university students were first to score in the second minute through Samuel Kamenya before George Mutira cancelled in the eighth minute.

In another men’s match, Usiu beat Pwani University of Kilifi County 3-0, while Kenya Police stopped Mombasa Sports Club 2-0.

Wazalendo drew 0-0 with Mavetrans and Usiu ‘B’ hit Mombasa Sports Club 1-0.

 Mvita XI fought for a barren score, Nairobi Simba hit University of Nairobi 1-0 in an earlier match, while hosts Mombasa Institute were held to a barren draw by Pwani University.
