The tournament, which saw an impressive turnout of over 800 students, witnessed a surge in participation attributed to the growing popularity of chess in the region, as highlighted by Tournament Director Andrew Owili.
With more than 30 schools in attendance, including St. Clare Special School, which caters to children with special needs, the event underscored the inclusive nature of chess, welcoming players of all backgrounds and abilities.
Among the standout performers were Mudasa Academy, Kisumu Senior Academy, Makini School, and St. Mary's School Yala, who emerged as formidable contenders in the school rankings, reflecting their dedication and commitment to the sport.
Leading the charge was Mudasa Academy, securing an impressive haul of three gold, one silver, and one bronze medal, reaffirming their status as a powerhouse in youth chess. Jalaram Academy also made their mark with three gold medals, while The Msingi School showcased their talent with a commendable performance.
In the individual categories, young chess enthusiasts showcased their skills across various age groups, with top students emerging victorious in fiercely contested battles of intellect and strategy.
In the under 8 category, Hussein Silim of Jalaram Academy and Faustine Fayola of Mudasa Academy clinched gold medals in the boys' and girls' divisions, respectively, demonstrating their exceptional talent at a tender age.
As the age categories progressed, the competition intensified, with students from different schools displaying exceptional skill and determination. Notable performances included Shivishwar Bodalikar of Jalaram Academy and Breetaliza Amandah of The Msingi School Academy, who emerged victorious in the under 10 category.
In the under 12 and under 14 categories, Curtis Reuben of Kisumu Senior Academy and Kennedy Ochieng of Mudasa Academy showcased their strategic prowess, securing gold medals in fiercely contested battles.
The under 16 and under 18 categories witnessed equally impressive performances, with Shiv Jethwa of Kisumu Senior Academy and Rishit Ravat of Kisumu Senior Academy emerging as champions, further solidifying their schools' dominance in the competition.
In the girls' divisions, Shakira Shukri of Jalaram Academy and Mary Agnes of Makini School displayed exceptional skill and resilience, claiming gold medals in their respective categories.
With the conclusion of the Nyanza Region Youth Chess Championship, attention now shifts to the Nationals scheduled for April 5th to 9th at Mang'u High School, Kiambu County.
