Kapsabet Boys: Where Ruto and Moi honed leadership skills

Kenya's fifth President elect William Ruto.

Kapsabet Boys boasts a rich, unique history. It was founded in 1925 as part of the Government African Schools. Actually, it was called Government African School, Kapsabet, and was for the longest time.

The provincial school was upgraded to national level, and not because of its reputation for excelling excellence in maths, the sciences and being a power house in athletics and basketball. Since 2007, Kapsabet Boys has maintained a mean grade of B+ and in 2010 it had a mean score of 96.55 per cent with 202 students scoring grade C+. Only four students failed to score university marks! Little wonder it was declared overall winners in the 2011 National Mathematics contest.

It was here that the late President Moi was student number 503. The man who would rule Kenya for 24 years took greater interest in leadership back in 1941 at Kapsabet Boys where he was school prefect (who led a strike over meat) besides playing defender for the school soccer team.

Other notable alumni who learnt under the motto 'Strive to Excel' include: President elect William Ruto (who went there for his 'A' Levels from Wareng Secondary), former ODM chair Henry Kosgey, former Agriculture Minister Kipruto Arap Kirwa and Dr Richard Belio Kipsang.

Nicholas Biwott also went to 'KB' as did former PSs Wilfred Kimalat and Joseph arap Letting, former Chief of the General Staff Daudi Tonje and former Kenya Army Commander Augustine Cheruiyot. We can't forget 'YouTube athlete' Julius Yego who bagged a gold medall at the Glasgow Commonwealth Games in 2014.
