Police in Bondo, Siaya County, are investigating the death of three suspected thieves who were lynched by residents in two incidents on Friday.
Witnesses said Nicholas Otieno and Maurice Oloo were killed for allegedly stealing cows while Maurice Oduor was lynched for stealing in an M-Pesa shop at Wambasa in Central Yimbo.
Area chief Gordon Opundo said the first two suspects allegedly stole the cows from Wambasa village and took them to the North Yumbo where they were arrested, and brought back to Wambasa before they were beaten to death.
"Otieno and Oloo were being taken to Usigu Police Station in Wambasa when the irate residents overwhelmed the chief who had made the arrest and beat the suspects to death," a witness said.
The third suspect is said to have met his death after he allegedly broke into an M-Pesa shop and stole Sh35, 000.
Opundo said the owner of the M-Pesa shop was at the scene where the first two other suspects were being lynched when Oduor took advantage and broke into the shop.
"It happened that someone had seen the suspect break into the shop. The suspect later admitted that indeed he had broken into the shop and stolen the money," said the administrator, adding that his admission angered residents who pounced on him with kicks and blows, and killed him.
The three bodies were moved to Bondo sub-county hospital mortuary awaiting postmortem as investigations continue into the matters.
