Kenyans have been advised to be on the lookout for potential floods, and flash floods as rains intensify in the next few days.

People living in landslide-prone areas within Mt Kenya, the Aberdare Ranges, and Western have been asked to be vigilant, to avert dangerous situations.

The Kenya Meteorological Department, in the latest weather update, has warned that heavy rainfall is likely to be experienced in several parts of the country in the next 24 hours.

Parts of the Rift Valley, Nairobi, Lake Victoria Basin, and the Coast will receive heavy rainfall of more than 40mm from Thursday to Sunday, April 28, but will likely reduce after some days.

"The water levels in rivers, lakes, and dams are expected to remain high,” Kenya MET warned.

Residents of Nyandarua, Laikipia, Nyeri, Kirinyaga, Murang'a, Kiambu, Meru, Embu, Tharaka-Nithi, Nairobi, and Machakos are advised to exercise caution.

Motorists have also been asked to avoid driving on poorly lit roads or driving through open water.

The ongoing long rains might cause damage by blowing roofs, uprooting trees, and affecting marine activities.

The heavy downpour has resulted in the loss of lives so far and caused damage to property and crops.
