Bilu Bhamra didn’t have much play ahead of the third leg of the 2022 Standard County Golf Classic Series.

But when he prepared for tee-off, he knew what lay ahead of him. The expectations. The hopes. The thrill.

He didn’t seem troubled with the fact that he’d been out of action for close to two years. That didn’t show anyway, as he triumphed at the par 70 Nyanza Golf Club in Kisumu, on Saturday.

The 40-year-old father of two fired 39 stableford points to emerge victorious on the tough course that overlooks the magnificent Lake Victoria. He termed the victory a great surprise as he has been out of the sport for two years.

“I resumed the game two months ago. I only practised on Friday ahead of this tournament. I hadn’t played for the rest of the week,” he said.

“Winning today (yesterday) was more of luck combined with the training I had on Friday. It was just one of those days you hit your ball on a tree and it finds its way to the pin position.”

The former club vice captain had never tasted victory in the past legs.

“This is the first time I’m winning a prize in this championships,” he said.

For his triumph, Bhamra was awarded with a ticket for two to any destination of his choice in Kenya courtesy of Kenyan low-cost airline, Jambojet. The former International Players Golf Tournament champion believes the series is a perfect idea that helps promote the game in all counties.

Bhamra started playing golf at the age of 13 in Kisumu after he was introduced to the sport by his uncle. He is eager to see one of his two sons become the club captain.

“I want to see them take Nyanza Golf Club to greater heights,” he said.

While giving out the prizes, Standard Group PLC Chief Executive Officer Orlando Lyomu urged Nyanza Golf Club management to identify more areas where trees can be planted.

This is inline with the tournament’s theme ‘On the green course, for the green cause’, which saw several trees planted by the sponsor and partners at the club on Saturday.

“This championship is no longer about the game alone, but about golf and sustainability of the environment where the sport is played,” Lyomu said.

Jambojet CEO Karanja Ndegwa reiterated Lyomu’s sentiments saying his organisation is supporting the series because its in line with their sustainable actions on climate change.

Space and Style Head of Commercial, James Kimotho said they went to Kisumu to support the tournament theme by offering solutions that are sustainable to the environment.

“We look forward to engage more with our customers in this region,” Kimotho said.

Other partners who were on board in the championships were FMD East Africa, whoa are distributors of farm machinery and the Mediheal Group of Hospitals.
