State picks 24 innovations to help fight coronavirus

Sixty-three innovations have been selected for a scale up after consideration by the Covid-19 ICT Advisory Committee.

This was the first round of call for submission of innovations that facilitate the efforts to combat the pandemic as well as stimulate economic activities.

The 63 were identified out of the 412 applications received by the committee. The potential innovations identified are divided into five categories, with health (24), education (seven), agriculture (three), transport (eight) and the economy (21).

The committee is mandated with identifying, supporting and aiding in scaling up local ICT solutions that can support the country in its efforts to combat the Covid-19.

It will link the identified innovators to government agencies and connect them to incubation hubs, funding opportunities and accelerators where applicable.

Spur growth

In a virtual showcase that was held late last month, 15 out of the 63 innovations showcased. ICT, Innovation and Youth Affairs Cabinet Secretary Joe Mucheru said the quick response to call for innovations demonstrates the technical capabilities of the country which should be tapped to fight the pandemic and spur growth.

“In examining the viability and scalability of the proposed solutions, the committee has forwarded several proposals to my office for review on key ICT initiatives and policies to respond to the pandemic and mitigate its effects on individual livelihoods, communities and the economy,” he said.

The forum also discussed leveraging Kenya’s competitive strengths in health, research and development, and ICT for preventive healthcare. The second call for submissions is ongoing and closes on August 21, with the second showcase scheduled for August 24.
